How it works

3 steps to wire up BYOK: Bring Your Own Key, no engineering required.

    Get an API key

    Generate a key from your Anthropic or OpenRouter dashboard. For OpenRouter, top up a balance and they pass-through bill at provider cost.

  2. 2

    Paste it in MoClaw Settings

    Open Settings → Models → BYOK and paste your key. Stored encrypted at rest, decrypted only at request time.

  3. 3

    Pick your model

    Switch the model picker to your BYOK model. Every new chat now bills against your key. Switch back any time.

Quick answers about pricing, privacy, and limits.

Do you store my API key?
Yes, encrypted at rest with envelope encryption. We need it to make requests on your behalf. You can revoke it any time from Settings, which deletes both the encrypted blob and the in-memory cache within seconds.
Do I still need a paid MoClaw plan?
No. BYOK works on every plan including the free tier. Paid plans unlock product features (cron, AI cloud computer, deep research) but not model access. That's all on your key.
Can I split between BYOK and included credits?
Pick one per chat for now. Cross-chat switching mid-thread is on the roadmap.
What about OpenAI directly?
Use OpenRouter for OpenAI models. Same upstream pricing, plus you get fallback to other providers if OpenAI is down. Direct OpenAI BYOK is on the roadmap.
Will MoClaw skills and tools still work?
Yes. Skills, browser control, cloud computer, scheduled tasks, file handling, all of it runs the same. BYOK only changes who pays for the model call.
